Olympic sailing dual-medallist Mathew Belcher's determination to achieve highly on and off the water has led to his being named Bond University Sportsman of the Year for the third time, at the University's Blues Awards last Thursday.
The 470 sailor, who won a gold medal in London, silver in Rio and is a seven-time World Champion, achieved an outstanding eight high distinctions in the eight subjects he undertook in the past year while studying for a Master of Valuation and Property Development and Master of Project Management.
Belcher was unable to accept the award in person, as he was en route to Japan with crew Will Ryan and coach Victor Kovalenko for a training camp. However, he sent a recorded message that was played for the audience.
“Although it’s been another very busy year for me, competing in Europe and Japan, I’ve really enjoyed being around campus a lot more and am looking forward to graduating early next year," he said.
"It’s a real privilege to receive this award. Thank you Bond University and Bond Sport for your support and for this honour."
Belcher and Ryan won the 470 World Championship in Greece in July and they are ranked No.1 in the world.
The 35-year-old has remained dedicated to his studies, despite his sailing commitments and the challenges associated with having a young family.
