Australia’s top Laser, 470 and Finn sailors, including Olympic Gold medallists Mat Belcher and Tom Burton, will spend most of the rest of October immersed in Japanese culture and conditions in a valuable transitional stint from the northern hemisphere summer.

Five 470 crews and six Laser sailors will go from a three-day training camp to Round One of the Sailing World Cup series at Gamagori, 275 kilometres to the west of the 2020 Olympic venue at Enoshima.

After the World Cup round, crews will have three days’ break before competing at the Enoshima Olympic Week regatta. Finn sailors Jake Lilley and Oli Tweddell will spend 10 days in camp before Lilley competes at Olympic Week.

“It’s a chance for all of them to get to know Japan a bit more, fit into the culture and the way of doing things there,” Laser team coach Michael Blackburn said.

“And being at the Olympic venue the week after will give us another chance to see the venue and get used to it."

Preparation: An aerial view of Enoshima, Japan, where the Olympic Sailing regatta will be staged in 2020.

Enoshima is already held with affection by 470 duo Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries, who return after their breakthrough Silver medal at the 470 Junior World Championships in September.

Jerwood was later announced as one of five recipients of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring program, through which she will be paired with Hall of Fame member and hockey legend Liane Tooth OAM.

“It’s definitely been an exciting time for our team,” Jerwood said.

“We learnt a lot during the Open and Junior World Championships and have been training hard back home off Freo since.

“The goal heading into this next trip to Japan is to continue to develop our skills and gain more experience sailing at the Enoshima Olympic Venue.”
